Yes you read correctly – the water is flowing into the new reservoir! Soon it will be filled and able to supply fresh source water to the people of Balacici.
It’s true that we are moving towards the completion of the project but we are not quite done yet.
First of all, we still have to finish the normal process – finish construction, technical checks of the Caritas team together with the supervising company, adjustments done by the construction company (if necessary), official technical check by expert panel, permission awarded by municipality, handover to the local community. So you see even once the construction is finished there are still quite a few hoops to jump through to get to the end of the project. The good news is though that as soon as the reservoir is filled with water we will already be able to supply the village with water – we won’t have to wait until the process is complete; which is really great!
Now to the second point: there a re a few things that have to be added to the original project. Because of higher water pressure in the supply part of the system (the part from the water source to the reservoir) we will need to build an additional pressure chamber about half way between the source and the reservoir. The higher water pressure actually ruptured the old pipe, which is about 40 years old. So to ensure that it can handle the pressure we need to keep it at a certain level, which the pressure chamber will be able to do.
Additionally we have to add one more pressure valve and an overflow pressure chamber right next to the reservoir. This chamber ensures that in case of too much water the reservoir overflows in a controlled manner. For these additional elements we had to expand the contract with the construction company and ensure that we have sufficient funding.
